The Keel has been laid on the LCS-11!

February 25, 2014 By Mark Waldie Leave a Comment

Amidst all the talk about the exact details regarding the ongoing fate the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program, let’s not let a major milestone go unrecognized. February 19, 2014 was the keel-laying (formal recognition of beginning of construction) for LCS 11 USS Sioux City at Marinette Marine Inc. (A Fincantieri Company). Continue Reading

Top Gun Fox Not a Fan of Littoral Combat Ship

February 25, 2014 By Mark Waldie Leave a Comment

Remember the 1980s movie Top Gun with Tom Cruise? Remember the character played by Kelly McGillis (Tom Cruise’s love interest)—the high heeled, blonde haired woman who told all the Top Gun pilots what to do. That movie character was inspired by Christine Fox, who worked at the US Navy’s Top Gun Program for Naval Fighter Pilot training at the time. She had strong views then and strong opinions now...including views on the Navy's Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). Continue Reading

Hot Pictures of Cool Ships

On February 11, 2014, SSI’s client VT Halter Marine of Mississippi launched the articulated tug barge (ATB) tug named “Denise A. Bouchard”. Continue Reading

Engineering America’s Maritime Dominance

February 25, 2014 By Mark Waldie Leave a Comment

"Engineering America’s Maritime Dominance." That’s an “assertive” name for a conference, but it was the title that the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) picked for ASNE Day, February 20-21, 2015 in Arlington Virginia. Continue Reading

SSI Plays Key Role in OPC Contract

February 21, 2014 By Mark Waldie Leave a Comment

Back on February 11, 2014, the competition to build the US Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) was narrowed down to three bidders: Bollinger Shipyards, Eastern Shipbuilding, and Bath Iron Works. We'd like to congratulate the three bidders who have reached this stage and say that we look  forward to working with the eventual winner. We'll be working with the winner because one of the requirements of the contract is that at the completion of delivery of the vessel to the USCG, the Continue Reading
