In order to put on a thorough presentation, members of the University of Victoria Submarine Club began training in MyLearning, SSI’s online training site for Autodesk and ShipConstructor software.

This is the fifth post of the series about SSI’s cooperation with the UVic Submarine Racing Club. Previous post: “SSI at UVic to Support Submarine Racers” Next Post: “Prize-Winning Performance of UVic Submariners.”

Testimonial about Training

Club member Tal Fleerackers (pictured above), gave a good testimonial. See below:

As Manuel mentioned, I have recently completed the SSI My Learning Essentials Training Package and got certified using the SSI Learning Verifier.

I found the training package to be comprehensive and easy to follow. The videos were easy to navigate through (I especially liked that I could use the transcript to select text and accurately move back and forth throughout each video if I had missed something or needed clarification), and the content of each video was both clear and thorough. Each video would provide a description of the tool and what it was useful for before providing the steps on how to use it. Additionally, I found the playlist option to be very beneficial, as I could save videos to revisit them if I had any trouble or was unsure of the result.

Part way through my training I began to use the written instructions in the training manual in addition to the videos. I would play the video sound and read along while following the corresponding steps in ShipConstructor to avoid taking up screen-space on my single monitor computer setup. This way I could toggle between the two resources if anything was unclear in the written instructions, and vice-versa.

Overall, I found the training to take approximately 12-14 hours, but I am certain that it could be completed faster if someone set their mind to it. (I completed the training at leisure between several other tasks, and often backtracked when returning to it). I would highly recommend the ShipConstructor Essentials training to anyone interested in an overview of the tools available through this software, and I look forward to learning more.

SSI was excited to hear Tal’s positive feedback regarding the training.

There is one more blog post in this series. It’s about the stellar success the SSI sponsored submariners had at the European International Submarine Race (eISR), 3-12 July, 2018, in Gosport, England.
