Technology

SSI-Port-Of-Innovation-Header

How do you convey the value of your products before they are actually built? How do you convey the functionality, the look, or the feel? Normally, you could create a prototype. But we’re in the shipbuilding industry where that is impossible. In fact, many times, we don’t even have detailed models or drawings that can be used to sell the client on the concept. So what’s the solution?

Use virtual renderings and animations

Here is an example from the automotive industry of a company using this strategy.  It’s an an example from Autodesk’s spotlight customer, Staud Studios.

We can all learn from this. Within the shipbuilding industry, you’re not able to create prototypes that can be used for pre-sales activities. Instead, you need to acquire sales based off of old projects or brand new concept designs. Why not use high quality renderings and animations? With Autodesk technology, the process is relatively easy, particularly if you are already using ShipConstructor.

Here’s how it is done. In the video below, Darren Larkins, SSI CEO, breaks down how you can use Autodesk VRED technology in conjunction with ShipConstructor.

Are your sales teams aware of these capabilities?

One thing to keep in mind is that you can spend A LOT of time on a rendering and animation. You can create realistic walkthroughs and even change out material types. (Personally, I like granite counter tops on my virtual yacht.) One question to ask yourself is what is your competition doing? Are they showing the client concepts just based off drawings? Much of the industry still does this but increasingly things are changing. If they are not using a more modern approach, you can create a differentiator for your company by using high quality renderings. On the other hand, if your competition already has started producing these kinds of images and animations, that is all the more reason to adopt this technology. You certainly do not want to be left behind!

Please contact SSI for information on how you can utilize this technology on your future projects.
